I was in a room full of wildly accomplished women this week, and I noticed something I haven't been able to stop thinking about. Two of them were wrestling with completely different things. One woman is an expert in her field and was struggling with how much of the messy version of herself she's willing to let people see. The stressed-out version. The imperfect version. The version whose kid might be losing their shit in the background. Another is known as strong and put-together. And she was wrestling with letting people see her dating life, her grief, the parts of her that don't look particularly fucking put together at all. Totally different problems. Except I don't think they were. Because underneath both of them I could hear the same question: What will people think if they see me being someone other than the woman I've taught them to expect? And THAT got under my skin. Because I'm 54. I have proudly entered the era of fewer and fewer fucks. There are plenty of things I once worried about people judging me for that I simply cannot summon the energy to give a shit about anymore. But that's not quite the same thing, is it? Because maybe I don't need everybody to like me. But are there still versions of me I need them to believe in? The powerful one. The sexy one. The woman who knows what she wants. The woman who can handle a lot. The woman who walks into a room like she fucking belongs there. And here's where my brain keeps going: None of those women are fake. I am powerful. I am sexual. I do know things. I can handle a lot. The trap isn't having an identity. The trap is when that identity becomes a job description. When Powerful Marta isn't allowed to be scared. When Sexy Marta isn't allowed to feel awkward or unwanted or unsure. When I-Know-What-I-Want Marta isn't allowed to have absolutely no fucking idea. That's when something real starts becoming a cage. And I think this is one of the sneakier invitations of midlife. Not simply: I don't give a fuck what people think anymore. But: I don't want to spend the rest of my life maintaining a character. Even a really impressive one. So that's the question I've been walking around with this week: Who are you still working really fucking hard to be? And maybe the even better question: What doesn't she let you be? Hit reply if you know. I'm genuinely curious what comes up. Marta P.S. Privacy is not the same thing as hiding. You don't owe the world every piece of you. I'm talking about the parts of you you would actually like to let breathe... if you weren't so fucking busy protecting the character. |

You know the moment. Someone asks where you want to go for dinner, and something in you lights up. The Thai place with the sticky tables and the chili that makes your lips burn. 🌶️ You can practically taste it. And then, before the words are even out, it happens. A little tightening at the base of your throat. A quick scan of their face. Your voice goes light and easy, and out comes, "Oh, I don't mind. Wherever you want." It takes about two seconds. Nobody notices. You barely notice. But your...
There's a moment a lot of women know and almost nobody talks about. Your body and your desire disagree. Sometimes your body is saying yes while the rest of you is quietly backing toward the door. Sometimes it's the reverse. You want him, you've wanted him all day, and your body just doesn't show up. And instantly, court is in session. Which one is telling the truth? What does this say about me? About him? About us? About my age? Most of us were handed a ridiculously simple rulebook for this....
There’s a particular kind of bullshit that happens when you teach people how to do something you’re still learning to do yourself. And apparently, I’m living it this week. 😂 So here’s the thing. I talk a LOT about the importance of sisterhood. About letting ourselves be supported. About the extraordinary things that can happen when women stop believing they have to do everything themselves. I believe every fucking word of it. And then my beautiful friend and podcast co-host Barbara started...
